Sharjah
A close neighbour to Dubai, Sharjah has acquired a Gulf-wide reputation for artistic excellence, manifested through museums, a prestigious art biennial and a corniche-gracing address (Qanat al-Qasba) that lays on an impressive cultural spectacle. In 1998, the city was designated by UNESCO as the ‘Cultural Capital of the Arab World’ for its considerable commitment to art, culture and preserving its heritage. The city’s roots are firmly bedded in Islam, a fact that filters through everyday life here.

Sharjah is also experiencing an upsurge in construction. In addition to residential towers, shopping centres and industrial areas in the city, a 3-kilometre stretch of the Arabian Gulf coast in the Hamriya area is being developed.
